Two goals from Calum Townsend and one from Paul Uppington saw Ashton and Backwell claim their first win of the season and claim an important three points over top of the table Wells City at The Athletic Ground on Saturday.
Townsend headed in just after half time to open the scoring before Uppington nodded in from a corner.
Alex Camm grabbed one back for the hosts before Townsend scored his second from Uppington's cross.
On a warm summer's day, both teams started brightly, but it was Mark Randall, playing his 600th game for Wells, who went close to open the scoring for the hosts when his 30-yard effort caught Lewis Coombes by surprise and Coombes did well to parry the ball away for a corner.
The visitors were the next to go close after Sam Thomas saw his shot pushed away by Kieran Hodges, before Wells lost Craig Herrod, their most inventive player, to injury after 28 minutes as the half time drew to a close with the game scoreless and only two shots on target throughout the half.
However Stuart Jones's men did open the scoring, seven minutes after half time through Townsend.
A wonderful 60-yard pass inside his own half from man of the match Tom Press, found Miles Hardidge clear on the left and his inswinging cross was met by the head of Towsend who guided it past Hodges.
Three minutes later The Stags doubled their lead after Townsend's corner caused the home's defence problems as Joe Bishop's header came back off the crossbar, before Uppington bundled the ball home.
Substitute Camm got one back four minutes from the end as he diverted home Charlie Crook's cross to halve the scores.
But it was Townsend who had the final say on a thrilling afternoon of football, as he picked up a cross from Uppington and turned well to double his side's lead and end Steve Bayliss's men their 100% winning record.
Next Saturday, sees Ashton and Backwell back at the Lancer Scott Stadium when they take on Longwell Green Sports at 3pm.
