Saul Jarrett's second-half goal moved Ashton & Backwell United up to fifth place, four points behind leaders Calne Town with a game in hand, after a 2-1 win over Warminster Town.

Jamie White opened the scoring with his first goal for the club after a great cut back from Charlie Saunders before the visitors, who came into the game having won three of their last four games, equalised after an own goal from Regan Sollars.

Jarrett then tapped home after good work by Paul Uppington to put the hosts back in front and it was a lead they never looked like they were going to lose as they held on to make it six games undefeated.

If the Stags are to push on for promotion, then it is games like these they need to win and whilst it was entertaining, there were too many mistakes and the hosts could and should have won more easily.

Harry Walker had the first shot of the game after 20 minutes after he picked up a White pass, before drawing a good save from Carl Crabtree.

The visitors went even closer nine minutes later after George Butler supplied Charlie Walton and his deflected shot beat Coombes from 25 yards, only for the post to come to the home side's rescue.

However, it was Stuart Jones's men who got the first goal of the game through 17-year-old White's curling shot into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

Good work on the right flank by Saunders saw his corner across goal smashed home by White, two minutes before the interval.

After the break the Maltmen had the greater urgency, but the hosts defence was equal to it, before skipper Walton was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes for dissent.

Moments later Andy Crabtree's men equalised as James Vincent flew down the left, cut in, before going past Bishop on the byline and squaring the ball across goal before going in off Sollars.

However the home side restored their lead after substitute Uppington steamed down the left flank, riding three tackles including an attempted trip, cut inside and passed to Jarrett in the box, who, under pressure, controlled the ball and thumped it home for a valuable three points.

The next Stags game is away this Saturday to bottom of the table Bristol Telephones at the BTRA Sports Ground.
