BACKWELL Flax openers Adam Watts and Tim Martin set a first wicket record partnership of 211 against Dyrham and Hinton 2nds on Saturday.
Dyrham won the toss and put Backwell into bat, Watts proved a fine anchor carrying his bat for 116 not out, his maiden century (two sixes and 16 fours). This enabled Martin to play a fine array of shots reaching his century off just 85 balls with three sixes and 10 fours.
When Martin fell lbw to John England, Watts was joined by Tom Phillips, who scored a rapid 48 in 25 balls with three sixes and five fours as Backwell finshed on 298-2, a highest score for the club.
In reply, Dyrham were never in the hunt. Only Robert Watkins (32) and Chris Porter (28) posting any kind of score. All of the Backwell bowlers performed well with
Gareth Griffith 3-6 on his debut, from just three overs.
Adam Cooper behind the stumps had a fine match with two fine catches and only conceding one bye as Dyrham were dismissed for 147.
