Good start for Failand

Failand and Portbury batsment get off to a flying start, hitting nearly 300 runs in their first match.

IN the season opener at the new Failand and Portbury ground in the blistering April heat, the home side made nearly 300 runs against Whitchurch.

A century opening stand by Simon Bachelor (38) and Ed Humphreys (85) got the hosts off to a good start. Good contributions by Henry Humphreys (60 not out), supported by Dan Chapman (26 not out) and Liam Smith (20) set a challenging total.

In reply, Ian Payter (59) saw Whitchurch off to a blistering start, partnered by Stephen Brown (30), but a young side could not sustain the weight of runs needed as Pierre Bell’s off-spin (3-20) with two wickets each for Tony Lippe and Tom Isom worked through the order.

Sam Gunarathne’s leg spin (3-1) finished the match as both sides had a good work-out ahead of the league season to come.
