Congresbury secured a 13-run opening-day victory over promoted Bristol West Indian Phoenix at the Rose Green Centre.

Having set a target of 142, good work in the field by the visitors saw them bowl out BWI for 128.

Captain Jason Yau won the toss and chose to bat but Jack Baber caused problems to bowl out Stuart Castle and Mick Edmunds

Lloyd Richardson and Ian Perry would also fall cheaply as the top four could only manage five runs between them.

Mohammed Jawad claimed the scalps of Jack Kearns (20) and Yau (24), while Joe Thompson hit 15 before he was bowled out by BWI captain Ricardo Williams.

Congresbury found themselves 79-7 as they looked like they were going to struggle to get past 100.

However, experience was to show as Neal Frost scored a crucial 26 and a formed a 46-run partnership with Jack Richardson, who added 20.

Sam Evans and Jos Tomlinson were the last two to bat and edged the total up to 141, before the latter was caught by Baber off the bowling of Isaiah Greaves.

After the interval, Congresbury came out with much needed belief and confidence as Edmunds and Jack Richardson halted BWI's strong start.

Edmunds ot the breakthrough when he bowled Raj Chudasama before Richardson dismissed Nicholas Clark after three fours.

Edmunds got his second wicket after a brilliant slip catch by Lloyd Richardson and Jack Richardson had Jack Baber caught by Kearns, before Sam Baber followed not long after, bowled by Yau for 12 to leave the game firmly in the balance.

Cole Pierre (18) and Mohammed Jawad (22) seemed to put the hosts on their way for victory but Joe Thompson took wickets with successive deliveries.

And when Jawad fell, the visitors were in the driving seat as Lloyd Richardson dismissed Greaves for a duck before BWI captain Williams was trapped LBW by oppositee number Yau to hand COogresbury victory.

The second team also won their first game of the season, securing an enormous 285-run victory over Chew Magna.

Mike Fisher (88), Mike Brooks (79), Paul Brean (78 not out) and Joe Palmer (59 not out) led them to 368-5 from 45 overs.

Youngsters Will Eyres (four) and Ben Cherson (three) shared seven wickets, as Stephen Baker (two) and Dan Elmont (one) also had success to help dismiss Magna for just 83.
