Close finish in French race

Only minutes separated the winning time, as Wraxall Village Club birds raced home from France.

Wraxall Village Club birds were liberated from Niort (France) into a west wind.

Amazingly, after racing 370 miles, only minutes separated the leading birds, both yearlings. Nailsea partners Wyatt & Gray timed the winner at 16.27, with Clevedon member Ray English timing at 16.30.

Six members sent 54 birds: Wyatt & Gray 1217 yards per minute (41 mph); Ray English 1211; D Moore 1210; Wyatt & Gray 1157; S Allen 1136; Wyatt & Gray 1132.

In another race, the birds were liberated from Littlehampton into a south west wind. The winning bird, a yearling, went to the loft of Nailsea member Gary Summers, completing the 106-mile flight in 146 minutes.

Twelve members sent 99 birds: G Summers 1282.7 yards per minute (44 mph); R & E Whiteside 1282.3; S Allen 1274; G Summers 1273.4; R English 1273.1; J & N Stone 1273.
