CLEVEDON Tennis Club’s first match of the season saw them having to travel to Bath for the opening fixture of this year’s National League campaign against strong favourites Lansdown, who included several Bath University players in their squad.

However, despite captain Mike Dale and debutant Greg Spinks losing in straight sets in no time at all, Clevedon surprised the opposition when Alex Allen, who was back from university, won his match in two tie break sets to reduce the deficit.

Lansdown were further shocked when veteran Jimmy Bassett rolled back the years to win his match comfortably in straight sets. In the doubles, Dale and Spinks lost in two close sets, but Allen and Bassett came from a set down to win in three sets and level the match.

Clevedon’s next match is home against Bude where they will hope to continue their promising start to the campaign.
