Clevedon Swimming Club finished in third spot in the third round of the Cotswold Swimming League.

Clevedon Swimming Club travelled to Bristol for the third round of the Cotswold Swimming League, competing against Bishopsworth, Brockworth and Lydney.

After the first two rounds, Clevedon were lying in sixth position with Bishopsworth one point ahead in fifth and Brockworth in eighth place, so the gala was set to be a close competition from the outset.

The girl’s team were: Sophie Chambers, Keziah Douglas, Annabel Earnshaw, Eva Farmery, Clara Finch, Amelia Hancock, Poppy Leaman, Caitlin Mark, Ruby May-Hawkins, Sophie Olver, Anna Papalouca, Chloe Price, Kate Sergeant, Malia Smith and Florence Tayler.

The boy’s team consisted of: James Collins, William Finch, Jon Gall, Lucas Hayles, Joel Lomax, Max Patterson, Jacob Sell, Luke Snell, Max Streeter, Sam Streeter, George Symonds, Joseph Thorne, Nathan Turner and Bertie Williams.

Clevedon started well and after the first 10 races were joint first with Bishopsworth, with some impressive swims from all age groups achieving six first and second position finishes with Annabel Earnshaw opening the gala with a win in the opening event, 15/U 100m individual medley.

Kate Sergeant and Amelia Hancock both finished in first place for their 15/U 50m backstroke and open/100m butterfly performances respectively, both swimming in higher age categories.

Nathan Turner also put in some great individual swims and finished a close second in his 15/U 50m backstroke following a short rest from his earlier event, the open/100m individual medley.

Further individual wins went to Caitlin Mark, Bertie Williams, Max Patterson, Eva Farmery, Poppy Leaman and Max Streeter. There were a number of well matched races, with swimmers finishing in close second and third positions.

A special mention must also go to the 11/U boys freestyle relay team (Max Patterson, Jacob Sell, Sam Streeter and Bertie Williams) and the 13/U girls medley relay team (Amelia Hancock, Poppy Leaman, Kate Sergeant and Eva Farmery), who have collectively swam faster than the cut off time in each round of the league to date and have been unable to add to the points tally.

Despite the fantastic swimming from everyone on the team, Clevedon finished in third place behind Bishopsworth and Brockworth. A total of 11 PBs were achieved by: Caitlin Mark, Bertie Williams, Anna Papalouca, James Collins, Chloe Price, Jacob Sell, Max Patterson, Sophie Olver, Clara Finch, Sam and Max Streeter.

As always it was a difficult job to nominate the star swimmer award which went Joe Thorne and Sophie Olver. The club was well supported with officials on the night ensuring the event ran smoothly (Darren Mennie, Neil Godfrey, Keith Hayles and Tasos Papalouca).

The team managers are also grateful for the support and volunteers (Pat Leaman (coach), Jan Farmery, Jayne Patterson, Nicola Mark and Fran Chambers), who ensure the team are all in the right place at the right time on the night.

The club is currently looking for new members. With competition opportunities available at all levels, swimmers are encouraged to contact the club for an assessment. Details are available on the club’s website – www.clevedonasc.co.uk
