Clevedon Coastal Rowing Club recently purchased their first club boat.

Elen No89 was welcomed into the club alongside loan boat Dirty Gertie No30.

Club chairman Scott Ferrier said: “This is great news for the club, it helps bolster our own identity on the racing circuit and gives us the opportunity for competition within the club with two boats."

Elen has already been put to competitive use where she competed in the South West Coastal Rowing League in Plymouth.

This leg of the league was hosted by Mayflower Offshore Rowing club and the race consisted of single, double and Quad sculls plus any fixed seat boat that could make the day.

The race day broke records for the number of rowers competing with over 100 taking part.

“With few boats in our class we dominated the leader board but were outclassed by the Quad sculls in all but the final Mixed race where we held off three of the faster boats for an impressive finish,” Ferrier added.

“The race experience for our rowers is much welcomed. We have a combination of new and experienced rowers.

“For some this was their first ever regatta. Plymouth Sound is a beautiful place to row and to row it in competition is a great welcome to the sport the new rowers deserved.”

The club has a very busy calendar with events every month now for the remainder of the year.

There are local competitions as well as rows in the South West Leagues and South Wales leagues.

Whilst Clevedon Coastal have managed to keep rowing with Covid-safe rules in place over the past few months, with the recent easing of restrictions and improved weather, they have hit the water in Clevedon on almost every tide that allows.

“We are looking forward to a busy 2021 on the water and I am really pleased for the club's rowers to have these opportunities back after being kept from their favoured sport for so long,” said Ferrier.
