Brian McCausland leads Nailsea Croquet Club’s Wild Wednesday competition.

SIXTEEN players took part in Nailsea Croquet Club’s September Wild Wednesday competition.

The winner was Jim Field with 96 points; Brian McCausland came second with 91 points, Pam Hendry third (73) and Ian Telfer fourth (72).

The overall results for the season are: Brian McCausland 299; Richard Delmas 285; Kathy Wallace 275; Brian Roynon 274.

The final Wild Wednesday of the season will be held on 3 October.

Two of Nailsea Croquet Club’s teams played their last league games of the season. Nailsea Central beat Kington Langley at home in the B League by four games to one. The Nailsea team got off to a good start in the morning with Doreen Wallace winning her singles by eight and Alan Longdon and Neil Devine clinching the doubles with a plus four win on time. In the afternoon Neil and Alan each won their singles by eight to win the match.

Results - doubles: Alan Longdon & Neil Devine won +4T (11-7). Singles: Doreen Wallace won +8 and lost -8; Alan Longdon won +8; Neil Devine won +8.

Nailsea second team beat Bath at home by three games to two. In the morning Geoff Hughes and Ryan Cabble won the doubles by 16 points, but Pat Long lost her singles game against Bath’s top player by eight points.

Afternoon singles wins by Pat and Geoff secured victory for Nailsea. Despite this win, Nailsea remain bottom of the four teams in this section and will be demoted to division three next season.

Results - doubles: Geoff Hughes and Ryan Cabble won +16. Singles: Pat Long lost -8 and won +21; Ryan Cabble lost -15; Geoff Hughes won +5.

Now that most teams have completed their league fixtures this season it is possible to give the final league positions of all eight of Nailsea Croquet Club’s Association Croquet teams and of their four Golf Croquet teams.

Association croquet - Nailsea 1sts finished fourth in Advanced Division 1 and the 2nd team were also fourth in Advanced Division 2. Nailsea North finished top of the Federation, with the Central team also finishing top of the Federation.

In the Intermediate League, Nailsea Central came fourth and Nailsea SE were second. Nailsea Central finished third in the B League, while the SE team finished second.

Nailsea Central, winners of the central section of the Federation League, has beaten Taunton Deane, winners of the south section, in the play-off and is scheduled to play Nailsea North in the league final at Budleigh Salterton on September 23.

In golf croquet, Nailsea North finished fourth, the Central team were first, Nailsea SE came fourth, as did the SW team.

Nailsea Central, winners of the central section of the Golf Croquet League, will play Camerton and Peasedown North, winners of the north section, away in the semi-final on September 16.
