Portishead RBL Ladies finished a successful season by winning the DRT League and runners-up in the county Fear Cup.

Portishead RBL Ladies have won the DRT League (Dorothy Ralph Trophy). In addition, for the third successive year the ladies made it to the Fear Cup final.

Unfortunately last year’s success was not to be repeated as they were narrowly beaten by Congresbury on the day.

Success in the county competitions continued as M Gozna won her final at Keynsham to become the Somerset County two-wood champion. P Groves and Gozna were runners-up in the county pairs.

The club rounded their season off with a mixed pairs day and a keenly-fought match between the ladies and men of the club.

Under cloudy skies and breezy conditions, Alan Smith embarked on his mission to win seven competitions over the period of two days, four on Saturday and three on Sunday.

He nearly succeeded, winning six of the seven including the championship and Hospital Cup, and his only blemish came in the two-wood singles when he was beaten by Derek Demery in virtual darkness.

Other competitors in multi finals were Simon Fuidge winning one (Giles Open 21-15 against Keith Chaney) and losing two, and Derek Demery also winning one and losing two.

In the ladies’ competitions, Sandra Sharp had a busy weekend being in three finals which she won, including the championship, 21-14 against Pam Soper.

Angie Crees also won her two finals, Veterans Cup, 21-8 against Pam Soper and two-wood singles, 18-6 against Sandra Pine. There was also a great win in the Novice Cup for Madison King, aged 11.

With the resignation of the club’s competition secretary two weeks prior to the weekend, well done to John Powell for sorting out a difficult playing schedule and to all competitors and officials.
