Backwell Swimming Club began 2019 with a fine win in the Cotswold League at Backwell Leisure Centre.

A packed crowd created an electric atmosphere for the home fixture of the Four Seasons gala, as Burnham, Wells, Clevedon, Cheddar and City of Bristol all visited.

Competition was incredibly close throughout, with positions changing regularly on the night.

But Backwell’s young team combined to claim 24 personal bests, with Max E setting a new club record in the 11-year-old boys’ 100 medley.

It all came down to the final race, with Backwell finishing on 216 points to pip Burnham by just two.

A spokesperson said: “Well done to all the swimmers and a huge thank you to our coaches, officials and young volunteers who helped make the gala run so smoothly.

“A big thank you to visiting teams and supporters, for making this the loudest and most exciting evening Backwell Leisure Centre has seen for a long time. We haven’t seen this little pool quite so busy.

“Backwell Swimming Club is a small club and when we go up against much bigger clubs, we enjoy the challenges that this offers.

“With hard work and training comes gain, satisfaction and sometimes victory.

“We are not complacent and recognise we always need to improve as a club/squad. We are happy to offer a home to new members, supporters and maybe even a sponsor.

“Swimming is a great inclusive sport, which helps individuals grow and improve themselves mentally and physically. At Backwell Swimming Club we actively encourage our swimmers to be the best that they can be, in both swimming and in life.

“Events such as this give our swimmers the chance to grow in stature and confidence.”

If interested in joining or supporting the club see backwellswimmingclub.com or go along to the pool on a club night and have a chat with one of the coaches or officials.
