Backwell B started the new Wrington Vale Billiards League season with victory over No Hopers.

THE new Wrington Vale Billiards League season opened up with a win for Backwell B at No Hopers.

George Rowe turned in one of his best performances against an out of touch Wayne Martin. The margin of victory was perhaps a little unjust on Wayne, but George deserved his victory.

Mark White and Dennis Mansfield had a tight game in the early stages before Dennis dried up and Mark moved forward to a 30 point lead. Dennis, however, knocked in a break of 27 to close the gap, but Mark held on to win by 10.

Bob Selby also went through a dry spell against debutant Darren Soloman as he allowed a lead of over 40 to vanish. Bob’s greater experience told in the end as he closed out a 17 point win.

In a great spirited match between champions Backwell A and Zimmers, there were three highly competitive games played out between friends and adversaries.

In the 105 minute opener, Martyn Howell got away from Bruce Bernard immediately building a 60 plus lead before Bruce found his form and came back to almost level. This happened twice more in this game alone as the heavily handicapped pair fought it out with Martyn just holding on for a narrow win.

Backwell’s Pete Wood found Wayne Ticer a bit of a handful in the early part of their game, Wayne quickly coming to terms with the table and closing. However, some great potting from Pete kept his hopes alive but Wayne eventually took this game by 18.

The last game pitched Backwell new recruit Derek Ellis against Zimmers’ transferee, the vastly experienced Roy Jenkins. With a big handicap deficit it was expected that Roy would have to really sparkle to catch up with Derek and win this game.

To Derek’s horror this was exactly what happened. Roy scored regularly and out-scored Derek, quickly clearing his 130 point handicap difference. This rang the alarm to Derek who slowly got going and eventually squeezed home by 24 points.

New players are always welcomed into the league – contact chairman Martyn Howell on 07912 552671 for more information.

Breaks: Martyn Howell 28, 26, 22; Dennis Mansfield 27; Roy Jenkins 26; Bruce Bernard 25, 23, 22; Derek Ellis 22.
