A hockey club in the South West is offering two months of free sessions to boys aged under-eight to under-18.

Westbury Hockey Club, based in Bristol, is running the scheme throughout September and October to encourage more boys to try the sport and get active.

Joe Thomas, a hockey coach and teacher from Weston-super-Mare, said: "I have been concerned by the lack of boys coming into the game through schools, club, and county."

"I’m keen to encourage as many lads as possible to give the sport a go, absolutely free of charge."

Mr Thomas said that while the club is based in Bristol, players already travel from areas including Yatton, Clevedon and Weston.

Coaching and sessions will be provided free of charge, with hockey sticks available to borrow if needed.

Mr Thomas added: "There is no catch; Westbury are simply keen to increase opportunities and participation for players in the local area.

"With multiple coaches, including county coaches, at each session, we can adapt to any ability."
