Nailsea Croquet Club hosted their annual OBE tournament this week, a competition for players 80 years or older and this year Terry Young was still competing at 91.
The tournament is played under altered Association Croquet rules making the games faster with less time watching.
It is played with the 10 shot rules, so no team is allowed to exceed ten shots, making long breaks impossible.
This odd style of the competition attracts players from around the region and this year people came from Bristol, Bradford on Avon, Kington Langley, Swindon and Taunton Deane.
The weather was a little unsettled, but the games were hard fought and the totals very close, with one going to a penalty shootout, between last year’s winner Geoff Hughes (Nailsea) and Rob Royffe (Nailsea), with Royffe becoming the overall winner.
As players would have been born in the 30’s and 40’s this also dictated the dress code for the day, anything goes as long it is in the correct period.
Doreen Wallace acted as score keeper for the day, whilst Sandra Morgan was in charge of refreshments.
All the players are looking forward to returning next year and Libby Howard-Blood, manager, said: “I have already heard from players that hope to be here too.”
