Manager Alex White said it was a "great day" for Clevedon Town after picking up a 3-1 win in the North Somerset derby against Nailsea & Tickenham in the Toolstation Western League Premier on Boxing Day.

Sam Beresford scored the opener for the Seasiders before Luke Osgood levelled the scores for the Swags to make it 1-1 at half-time.

Further goals from Beresford and Owen Punselie in-between Lloyd Mill's red card sealed the triumph.

The victory at the Everyone Active Stadium came front in of 364, the club's biggest crowd since 2009, and helped Town extend their lead at top of the table to four points.

“It was a big game for both clubs," he said.

"Nailsea came with a game plan to play in a way that was going to frustrate us which they did really well. Derby games are never straightforward and free-flowing and we just had to find a way to win it by doing the basics right and showing our quality.

“At the key moments we took our chances when we needed to. Level at half-time was probably fair but then we scored a good goal at a good time just after half-time.

"The red card changed the dynamic of the game a bit and they stayed in the game really well, but I didn’t think we gave them any clear chances and then hit them on the break right at the end.”

Key to Clevedon’s success this season has been Beresford’s 19 goals in 22 games and White added: “It’s fantastic – he’s in that rich vein of form at the moment and has been clinical in front of goal all season.

"But we have also been superb defensively and have a strong base. Today has been a great day for the club with a big crowd and a super atmosphere, but we’ll continue to take it a game at a time and now move on to a completely different challenge at Bridgwater on Saturday.”
