Syd Camper celebrated reaching 50 goals for Clevedon Town with a last-minute winner at Shepton Mallet recently.

Camper is known for his versatility and has worn eight different shirt numbers, which he admits can act as an asset and a millstone

"I’d never not play wherever required, but I admit sometimes it can be a bit frustrating from a personal point of view if you like to play in one position but know you’re good somewhere else," Camper said.

"But I never let it worry me and I’m happy to play and be part of the side and do what’s needed.

“Maybe that versatility is partly why it took so long to get to 50 goals, so it is a bit of a relief because everybody wants to score goals wherever you play, but to be honest it’s more important to win games for the team rather than score goals for myself.

“I always try to lead by example, be consistent in everything I do and do what’s best for everyone and the team."

Camper first signed in 2015 as Clevedon were recovering from on and off field problems following forced relegation from the Southern League.

“It was a very hard season and very different to where we are now, but the important thing was not to go down again, and we didn’t," Camper said.

Camper also remembers his unique debut on October 30, 2015, when he looked to have scored his first goal for the Seasiders against Winterbourne United after his left-footed corner saw Lewis Pierre get a hand to the ball but could only help it into the net.

Jake Harris scored Clevedon's winner but in December United resigned from the league and all the results were expunged.

“Yes I scored in my first game against Winterbourne who then withdrew from the league and the goal was chalked off," he added!

Camper then went off elsewhere including a spell at Bridgwater and it was to be September 2018 against Odd Down before his first goal that counted.

He said: "The club wasn’t working right first time round, but I came back to a completely different club, the team was more settled and together and everything was up and running and it was a proper club again, like now.”

As for the future he said, “I don’t really set personal targets, but I think 100 goals will now be a real challenge but playing wise I want to keep going until the body breaks and after reaching 200 games go on to 250, 300 and maybe more.”
