Yatton Rugby Club has scored a £2,000 grant in recognition of the role they play in the community.

The money was awarded by Persimmon Homes as part of their Severn Valley’s Community Champions scheme.

The cheque was presented at the club's home grounds to club president Paul Griffin, treasurer Graham Goodhind, and flanker Finn Skuse by Carly Spear, the sales director of the housebuilder.

Ms Spear said: “Yatton RFC is clearly a community institution and is exactly the kind of organisation we love to support at Persimmon through our Community Champions scheme.

"It was great to meet Paul, Graham and Finn at the presentation and hear about their passion for the club, and their plans moving forward.

“Hopefully, new and future residents in Yatton will become dedicated fans and players, and allow the club to go from strength to strength.”

The nationwide scheme funds local causes and organisations to the tune of over £700,000 a year, with previous recipients including Weston-super-Mare Food Hub, Bristol Children's Charity, and South West Children's Hospice.

Established in 1968, Yatton RFC currently boasts over 300 members, offering both senior and junior teams ranging from under 6s to under 19s.

Adding to her company's investment in the region, the company has plans to build 280 high quality homes in Yatton to meet local housing needs.

Additional properties are also being developed at nearby Haywood Village in Weston-super-Mare, with prices starting at £287,000.

President Paul Griffin said: “We are very grateful to Persimmon for their donation because, without the income the club generates, we won’t be able to provide everything that’s needed for players to actually play the sport they and our fans love so much.

"With so many members and players, it is an exciting time for Yatton RFC so to get a financial boost like we have from Persimmon can help go a long way in facilitating progress at the club."
