Ashton & Backwell United fell the wrong side of a five-goal thriller in Uhlsport Somerset County League Division One at Minehead AFC last Saturday.

The hosts raced into an early lead with the opening goal after three minutes.

The Stags weren’t behind for long, however, as they equalised seven minutes later through Fraser Devlin after he scored on the rebound following TJ Smart’s effort which struck the crossbar.

With 10 minutes added on at the end of the first half, Minehead retook the lead to go into half-time 2-1 ahead.

Ashton & Backwell came out after the break refocused and rejuvenated and levelled the scores once again. This time the roles were reversed as Devlin’s great cross found Smart to score after the hour.

The Swags had the chance to take the lead when Bill Devoy was brought down in the box five minutes later but Smart’s penalty was well saved by Adam Jones.

And the miss would prove costly as late on in the game Minehead took the lead for the third time when the Stags were waiting for an offside flag which never came.
