Clevedon Town were beaten for the first time in the Toolstation Western League Premier this season after defeat against Shepton Mallet tonight (Wednesday).

Josh Jenkins scored the only goal of the game following a Mallet counter-attack to break Seasiders hearts in the 81st minute.

Clevedon shaded the first half but couldn’t convert their chances with Sol Kent fired a wonderful effort against the crossbar while Freddie King and Alex Camm denied by Tom Roberts.

After the break chances were far and few between before Jenkins struck the killer blow to end Clevedon’s run of 13 league games unbeaten.

Shepton Mallet’s Josh Legge had the first opportunity of the night but his effort flew straight into the grateful arms of James Dunn after three minutes.

The Seasiders had their first chance 16 minutes and went close to taking the lead through Kent.

Dunn kicked the ball forward and found Kent, he showed great strength and went for goal but his fantastic effort came back off the woodwork, which evaded Sam Beresford on the rebound.

Seven minutes later Beresford won the ball off Roberts, he was forced wide but was still able to get his effort away and is heading in but Roberts was able to keep the ball out.

Captain Henry Westlake saw his tame shot from the edge of the area gathered by Roberts.

Legge then saw his low attempt the wrong side of the post before the hosts had their best opportunity of the night.

King did well to keep to keep a long ball in play, he turned Harry Rutty inside out and went for goal. His effort was blocked by Roberts before, on his second attempt, ge saw his strike cleared off the line into the path of Camm, whose drive was deflected over by Roberts as the game went into half-time goalless.

Both teams cancelled each other after the break before Shepton Mallet’s Jake Sloggett’s free-kick was superbly kept out by Dunn in the 75th minute.

And with nine minutes to go, Mallet did get break the deadlock.

With Clevedon having so many men upfield Dylan Gould took advantage to find Charlie Bateson, whose clever flick found Sloggett and his cross fell into the path of Jenkins, he took the ball forward before firing the ball into the bottom corner past Dunn for the winner.
