Winscombe RFC were edged out 10-7 in their Tribute Severn Regional 2 derby with close rivals Gordano on Remembrance weekend.

Following a week’s worth of heavy rain, underfoot conditions at Gordano were not ideal for expansive running rugby but the game still went ahead.

Despite having their chances, both teams squandered their opportunities and went into the break with Gordano leading by a solitary penalty kick through Lewis Leaker.

The second half was, in the main, an equally drab but nevertheless engrossing arm-wrestle that burst into life in the closing ten minutes.

Gordano failed to double their lead with a penalty in front of the posts before Winscombe Number Eight Oscar Browne crossed at the other end after a sustained period of pressure near the home team’s line. Centre Sam Dearsley added the conversion from the touchline to put Combe 7-3 ahead.

As the clock went into the red it looked like the visitors would cling on for a narrow victory but Gordano put together one last attack, chipped over the defence and Josh Richards touched down in the corner with Leaker adding the extras to seal the game.

Both sides return to action this Saturday as Winscombe are at Trowbridge while Gordano host Keynsham.
