A month of finals have been decided at the 2023 Club Championships at Clevedon Lawn Tennis Club.
Club members have been contesting a range of tournaments including knockout events, which have taken place across the summer, culminating on Finals Day plus one day veteran & vintage competitions.
Taking the trophies in the one-day events were:
- Men’s Veteran Doubles – Stu Bannerman & David Thomas
- Men’s Vintage Doubles – Chris Miller & Steve Vailes
- Ladies’ Veteran Doubles – Liz Lester & Mandy Vickers
- Ladies’ Vintage Doubles – Deb Barnes & Jane Sykes
- Mixed Veteran Doubles – Ian Law-Smith & Jane Sykes
- Mixed Vintage Doubles – Pete Flower & Mandy Vickers
Finals Day saw the open age group events decided. The day began with matches pitching youth against experience, club coaches Gemma Hockin and Matt Rogers faced Tilly McNamara and Tommy Wellings in the singles finals.
Hockin vs McNamara proved to be the match of the day, after sharing the first two sets 6-4, 4-6 the start of the final set was crucial and it was Hockin’s experience and tenacity to keep getting back McNamara’s big hitting that saw her take the lead before going on to claim a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win.
Rogers vs Wellings was next on court and after sharing early breaks of serve Rogers deployed his serve & volley style to take control and go on to win 6-2, 6-1 getting his name back on the trophy after a 15-year gap away from the club.
Next up was the ladies’ doubles, another story of experience versus youth; Hockin teamed up with fellow Gemma Rogers, taking on ladies’ captain Rachel Elliott & Olivia Wellings.
Elliott & Wellings started strongly taking an early lead with a number of winners coming from their rackets. Hockin & Rogers were not phased and worked their way back into the match to take the first set 6-2, they kept this momentum going to run out 6-2, 6-1 victors.
Finishing the day was the men’s doubles with Matt Rogers & Mike Dale taking on fellow first team players Jason Burgoyne & Mike Maiden.
In an entertaining match full of exciting rallies the first set was tied at 3 games all before Rogers & Dale took control reeling off the next 9 games and taking the title 6-3, 6-0.
