Clevedon RFC under-15s tasted success with victory in the Mendip 7s held at Winscombe RFC recently.

Altogether there were eight teams in two pools were to play it out for a spot in the semi-finals.

The tournament got underway with hosts, Winscombe beaten by Bath. Next up Clevedon would record a big victory against Winscombe Seconds.

Chepstow RFC, visiting from the Wales/England border, became the team to beat with emphatic victories over Gordano, Winscombe and Bath, who were swept aside without conceding a point.

Back in the other group Clevedon had victories over Cheddar and Avonmouth to finish top of the pool with the reward of a semi-final against Bath.

Chepstow dispatched Avonmouth in the first semi-final again without any trouble.

In the other semi-final Clevedon went up three tries to nil, scoring straight from kick-off and the following restarts. They went on to score three more tries to record an 34-14 win.

Following the Plate final, where Gordano beat Winscombe, the Cup final commenced.

Chepstow were ahead by three tries to nil at half-time. With a mountain to climb and playing up the slope in the second half against a team who had not conceded a point in the tournament, Clevedon were up against it.

All seemed lost until inspirational captain, Teddy Birkbeck, gave a team talk in the huddle and to him the result was never in doubt if they kept their heads, maintained their discipline and their self-belief.

Clevedon scored two quick tries from Matt Small in the corner set up an exciting last few minute.

With the score 15-14 to Chepstow, Clevedon were awarded a penalty which led to some frustrated and inaccurate mistakes from Chepstow, who went down to six-men with a yellow carded for their troubles.

With seven against six, and in the last play of the game the ball got quickly moved to the wing into the hands of Small who went over to complete a memorable hat-trick to claim victory by 19-15.

There was jubilation from Clevedon's players, and joyous tears from the parents and coaches in a true team performance.

Chepstow were stunned but gracious in defeat and headed back over the bridge still in disbelief, but Clevedon ensured they ended the season in a fantastic way.
