Nick George has stepped down from his role as Clevedon RFC head coach following the completion of the 2022/23 season.

George has secured a role with the Fire Service and the time demands will not allow the commitment needed with the Seasiders.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me at the club over the last three years, in particular (Tony) Dauncey who I’ve spoken to more than my wife in the last 18 months,” George told the club’s website.

“I also want to thank the players, I’ve enjoyed seeing them grow as rugby players but also as bloody good people.

“I’m excited to see how the coaching team can develop on from this foundation stage next season."

George came in alongside former Director of Rugby David Owen and coach Jon Vickers ahead of the 2020/21 season, which was decimated by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The last 18 months has overseen a major overhaul in the culture and identity at Clevedon, which has led to a marked improvement in results.

Clevedon have gone from bottom of the league after seven matches last season to finishing sixth in Counties 1 Tribute Western North this campaign.

George led his side to a 26-22 victory over Midsomer Norton last Saturday.

"This is the start of an exciting time at Clevedon RFC, it’s been great to see the volunteers that have jumped onboard and helped recreate the buzz on a Saturday afternoon," he added.

“Lastly, thanks to Neil Tucker for putting his faith in me and thanks to Amber for putting up with me.

“I’ve loved my time as Head Coach, I’ll look forward to contributing again in the future.”

Director of Rugby, Tony Dauncey, said: "Georgy will be massively missed, his enthusiasm and passion for the way the game should be played is contagious, he has a great relationship with the boys and has been a pleasure to work with.

“However, we knew this day may come which is why we built a coaching team which Nick has lead brilliantly, this should enable us to maintain some continuity moving into next season whoever takes over.”

Dauncey will now seek to build a coaching team to move into the 2023/24 season.

He added: “It is massively important that we maintain and build on the momentum created this season.

“We have a fantastic group of young players, supported by a fantastic coaching team.

“We will look at what we need to add to the coaching team to move forward and will announce our new structure in May, allowing the new team time to plan for the season.”
