A Yatton singing teacher who was a judge on a TV talent show, and has composed songs for chart-topping stars, was rewarded for her charity efforts with the ‘truly unforgettable experience’ of meeting a royal couple.
Rachel Mason, who has created tunes for the likes of Dua Lipa, saw her work for a good cause recognised by getting to meet Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at a charity ball earlier this month.
Rachel’s career reached new heights last year when she was a judge on Sky One’s Sing: Ultimate A Cappella programme, which was nominated for a National Television Award.
Off the back of her work with the show, she was enlisted as a judge for WellChild in its Over The Rainbow competition, which saw primary school choirs vie for a chance to perform for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the WellChild Awards.
The organisation, of which the Duke is a patron, is the national charity for seriously ill children and the awards ceremony on September 4 raised valuable cash and honoured the work and bravery of volunteers and children.
Rachel, who has been a singing teacher and musical director for 14 years, rubbed shoulders with some big showbiz names at the swanky gala before the youngsters she coached from Riverside School delivered a stunning performance of a song from the musical Wicked.
She said: “I was personally invited to meet the royal couple as they wanted to thank me for my work judging the winning school choir who opened the awards ceremony with an outstanding performance of Defying Gravity.
“The royal couple were full of smiles after giving high fives to every member of the choir after they performed.
“I had a conversation with them both about the uplifting power of music and the joy the children brought to everyone when they sang earlier in the evening.
“They said it had been a highlight of the night for them and that they had found it extremely moving.
“It was a truly unforgettable experience.
“I’m 35 weeks pregnant and felt the baby kick very hard when I curtsied and shook hands with the royal couple, as if he also grasped the magnitude of the moment.”
