NORTH Somerset commuters travelling into Bristol will encounter road works along the Long Ashton bypass from Monday.

Resurfacing and traffic light replacement work on the A370 by North Somerset Council is due to take two weeks to complete at a cost of 275,000.

Temporary signals and speed limit restrictions will be in place while the work is carried out. Sections of the road and slip roads will be closed when work is done on them and there will be signed diversions.

The first phase of the resurfacing work, carried out by contractors Balfour Beatty WorkPlace, will be the north-east bound lane of the A370 toward Bristol from Yanley over-bridge to its junction with the B3128 slip road. Other sections of the road will then be resurfaced in phases.

There will be temporary traffic lights on the slip roads while the traffic lights are updated to low-voltage signals, which will include vehicle detection technology to ease traffic and make the slip road safer.

They will also be more visible to drivers, due to built-in LED lamps that are particularly effective in bright, sunny weather.

North Somerset Council’s deputy leader and executive member for highways, Elfan Ap Rees, said: “By combining the resurfacing and traffic-light upgrade we will be cutting down congestion for the travelling public.

“With a scheme of this size on one of our major routes there is bound to some delays to journeys. We will work as hard as we can to keep these to a minimum.”
