A PORTISHEAD historian is appealing for the last skittles teams that played at the town’s White Lion pub to come forward.

An old scoreboard, still with the final scores in place, has been uncovered in the former skittle alley during the renovation of the listed High Street building and Sandy Tebbutt, author of the Possett Pieces local history books, would like to document the last teams that played in the popular venue. She said: “The skittle alley was condemned many years before the pub closed and it would be good to document information about its final days in operation.”

The pub is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment and is expected to be reopened in May by the family restaurant chain Mezze.

John Wagstaff, site manager for the Wensley Group, which is carrying out the refurbishment, said: “We are very much aware of the historical importance of the White Lion which is why we are sympathetically restoring the building to such high standards and not just discarding anything we think will be of interest or importance to local people.”
