The owners of a world-famous paddle steamer have said ‘funds are urgently required’ to ensure its return to the Bristol Channel next season.

More than 5,000 well-wishers have donated £850,000 to the Waverley boiler refit appeal since it was revealed in May that the steamer would miss its annual trips from Clevedon, Minehead and Ilfracombe.

With £1.45million still needed to hit the £2.3million target for the refit the steamer's owner Waverley Excursions says 'funds are urgently required'.

General manager, Paul Semple, said: "The continued support for the appeal has been heartening, with many donating who are keen to see Waverley back operating on the Bristol Channel next year.

"We are delighted with the total raised so far but time is tight if we are to reach our target and have Waverley back in service next summer."

Those wishing to support the appeal can do so at www.waverley
