MANAGERS of Glebe Field in Clevedon are looking for volunteers to look after some chickens they want to keep at the beauty spot.

Glebe Field, adjacent to St Andrew’s Church, has been transformed from the town’s former donkey field into an attractive space featuring a nuttery, a new path way and seating.

Eric Holdsworth, project manager for the area, now wants to house 20 chickens in the 1.4 acre field to attract more families to the area. He is also hoping to turn the site into a butterfly sanctuary and is planning to release some of the insects into the space in the hope they will colonise the surrounding area.

Eric said: “We want to develop it into a butterfly sanctuary and hopefully create colonies which will then also establish in neighbouring areas.

“We also want to keep about 20 chickens there. We’ve got an enclosure, we just need some people to help with the management of them.

“We would also like part of the area to be a nuttery. We want it to be a wildlife haven and we’ve already got rabbits, badgers, jays and woodpeckers.”

The church hopes to transform the field, in Old Church Road, into a community space, which is expected to take two years and cost 8,000.

Picnic tables and memorial benches have already been installed on a path leading around the field.

Mr Holdsworth said: “We want to encourage the community to use it, particularly children and young families as it’s an enclosed area where children can run around and explore.

“It’s been really good how the community has got involved in helping to transform it.

“We’re hoping it will be an area people can go and sit on benches and admire the views.”

Volunteers are invited to help tidy up the area every Monday and Wednesday from 9.30am to noon.
