Views wanted on police reforms
PUBLIC views are wanted on a revolutionary plan to revamp the way Avon and Somerset Constabulary is governed.
Government proposals to reshape police hierarchies include publicly-elected commissioners to replace police authorities at holding forces to account.
The idea has divided opinion, with current police authority chairman Peter Heffer already voicing his opposition.
He said: “We have long said that we think the plans are too costly and not appropriate for the diverse communities of Avon and Somerset.
“You do not hear people calling for their local hospitals and local schools to be run by one person. It just doesn’t happen.”
The authority has already conducted an opinion poll, and says 70 per cent of those surveyed said the 1million election would be a waste of money.
However, the time has now come for people to contribute views directly to the group of MPs who will have the final say on the idea.
