FIREFIGHTERS were called to rescue an injured van driver on the M5 this morning (Tues).

Crews from Avonmouth, Patchway and Pill attended the accident at 04.25am and found the vehicle on its side on the northbound carriageway between junction 19 (Portishead) and 18 (Avonmouth). No other vehicles were involved.

Firefighters removed the windscreen to allow the driver, thought to be in his 30s, to escape.

He was not trapped but after receiving ‘superficial cuts’, was medically unable to open the doors himself, a spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue said.
