AN ENGLISH oak tree has been planted at the Lake Grounds in Portishead to mark 100 years of the seafront beauty spot.
Chairman of North Somerset Council, Councillor Ann Harley, was joined by Portishead Town Council chairman, Reyna Knight, ward councillor David Pasley and Cllr Felicity Baker, North Somerset Council’s executive member responsible for tourism and leisure services, for the event.
The tree planting is the only official activity organised to mark the centenary of the Lake Grounds, much to the disappointment of residents in the town.
Members of the community have repeatedly expressed dismay that the anniversary was not given a higher profile, however, individual groups have organised their own celebrations.
The Lions Club of Portishead organised two Lake Grounds events to mark the anniversary and the Gordano Society published a book entitled The Jewel in Our Crown, which is full of historical information about the beauty spot, collected and edited by group member Sandy Tebbutt.
