A Tickenham woman who was inspired to write a one-act play following her brother's unexpected death has won a top award.

Tickenham Drama Group member Lis Jeffery wrote Worst Case Scenario after her brother, John, passed away suddenly and she took home the best original play award at the Bristol One Act Festival.

Lis learnt of his passing after a sell-out show of her previous play, I’ll Be Seeing You.

She said: “This is about the different ways in which people deal with bereavement as it is often a taboo subject.

“Part of me was thankful John had not protracted an illness which left him impossible to live with.

“He’d lived the dream in California in every sense of the word, and here was his body letting him know enough is enough.

“I was lucky to have friends at the drama group who performed the play so well.”

Lis will now enter the All England Theatre Festival final later this year.
