PORTISHEAD’S open air pool has been attracting numerous swimmers brave enough to take to the water even when it records a single-figure temperature.

The pool has been running cold water swimming sessions since the end of September and these have proved a hit with many open water swimmers keen to get some training in.

The sessions will continue on Saturdays from 9am to noon until Christmas and a special swim has now been planned for Christmas Day morning as a result of their success.

At the AGM of the community trust which runs the facility, held on November 27, a total of 40,400 visitors used the pool during its latest season, down slightly on the previous year’s record due to some poor weather in August.

Next year’s season is due to start on April 18. However, before then, plans are in place to install a new PA system, upgrade the tills and credit card facilities, install new paving and also create an improved locker system.

Low energy lighting will be installed in the changing rooms and a more efficient boiler for the showers will also be put in thanks to a grant from the British Gas Energy Fund.

Anyone wishing to become a trust member or part of the pool’s band of volunteers should email info@portisheadopenairpool.org.uk for more details.
