Rescue crews found the swimmer in the Bristol Channel.

Volunteers with Portishead Coastguard and RNLI rescued a swimmer from the water in the Bristol Channel yesterday (Monday).

Rescuers were called out at 11.16am after reports of a person in the water.

Working with the police, fire service, Portishead and Chepstow Coastguards and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter, the RNLI volunteers were directed to the last reported sighting.

The crew was quick to spot the casualty who was struggling to stay afloat in the cold water.

One crew member entered the water to grab the person before they went under the water.

The RNLI volunteers pulled the casualty on board the lifeboat where they were checked for injuries and given first aid.

The coastguard helicopter crew airlifted the casualty to hospital for treatment.

RNLI Portishead would like to thank all the search and rescue teams, along with the nearby fishing vessel who helped to locate the person.
