THE future of the Nailsea Christmas street fair looks more secure after new volunteers came forward.

The annual festive event, which has run for 15 years, looked in jeopardy when key members of the fair committee left.

However, following an appeal for more help, three people have come forward to offer their time to the project.

Firefighter Andre Harvy, Weston College law teacher Alexandra Sermon and customer at Gilly’s Cafe in High Street, Alison Best, are now part of the committee that is led by cafe owner Gilly Chu.

Despite this, there are still worries about the number of people who will be willing to help during the event with running errands, manning stalls and clearing rubbish.

As a result, youth organisations in the town will be asked to help out in return for a donation toward their services.

The committee will hold a meeting at the cafe at 5.45pm on May 10 to assess whether they have enough help to continue the event. Anyone interested in lending a hand is welcome to attend.

Mrs Chu said: “This is the lifeline we needed to stage an event this year but more willing helpers could be very welcome.

“We don’t want to cancel the fair because it’s so popular in the town but we will make a final decision on May 10.”
