A new attraction has popped up at Clevedon Pier this week.

The barrel of laughs is the brain-child of local student Ben Pestell who came up with the idea of giving the barrel a voice.

A passerby can insert a coin into the barrel and in return it will tell a joke.

Business manager Nicole Laken said: “I was delighted when Ben offered to take on the technical challenge of giving the barrel a voice.

“It has a long history with the pier and was used when the pier collapsed as a collection vessel to raise money for the restoration.”

With the help of volunteers who refurbished it and lent their voices and jokes to the barrel, it brought about a new lease of life for the tired keg.

The barrel will help to raise money funds for the pier, which is run by the Clevedon Pier and Heritage Trust, and hopefully provide visitors with a good laugh.

It can be found on the Grade-I listed pier itself and all the cash raised will go back into maintaining the local landmark.
