A PORTISHEAD film student has been shortlisted for a top award.

Sophie Alicia Shaw’s work has been nominated for Best Film made by over 13s in the national First Light awards. She will head off to London on March 15 for a prestigious ceremony at The Odeon in Leicester Square.

The university student was awarded a 3,000 grant to make her short film, entitled The Box, after explaining her concept to First Light, an organisation that helps young people to develop their skills, talent and creativity.

The film, which involves a dad’s struggle to find work and the impact it has on his family is centred around the television which brings the family together.

Former Gordano School student Sophie, aged 19, who is studying a BA in Film at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, said: “This is the first real film I have ever made so to be nominated for an award for it is exciting and encouraging.”
