MORE than 60 schools, colleges, and children’s centres are closed today after heavy overnight snow.
Around three inches fell from about 3am, with further flakes continuing to fall into the morning.
Several roads are already closed in the south of the district, too, with conditions judged impassable.
North Somerset Council gritters are working overtime to try to keep major commuter routes clear.
A spokesman said: “Road conditions remaining difficult but main routes are still passable with care. Looks like conditions will remain similar for the next few hours at least.
“We have ploughs operating on the A369, A38 and A370 removing accumulations of slush and snow, and further salt will be laid as part of this operation.
“Officers are continuing to monitor conditions of the road network and will be arranging appropriate salting/ ploughing operations as resources allow.”
Bus services between Weston and Clevedon, Portishead and Nailsea have been suspended, along with links from Weston which pass through Congresbury, Yatton and Backwell.
Police report no serious accidents so far, but are advising people to avoid travelling if possible.
A spokesman said: “Around 10-15cm of snow is expected to have fallen by the end of today, making highways dangerous for driving.
“While there have been no major incidents on the roads in Avon and Somerset we are advising to stay indoors.
“If you do have to drive, we suggest you slow down and brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible to avoid skidding.
“Make sure your windscreen is clear and your lights clean and working properly. Check your tyre pressure and your radiator antifreeze levels. It’s probably a good idea to carry de-icer, food, a hot flask, a blanket and a shovel as well.”
More than a dozen flights to and from Bristol Airport have been cancelled after three inches of snow fell overnight.
Incoming aircraft from Newcastle, Amsterdam and Paris have been cancelled, preventing return journeys from going ahead.
A flight from Brussels has also been cancelled as have a number of outgoing ones. Many other flights have been heavily delayed.
An airport spokesman said; “An estimated three inches of snow fell overnight, and snow continues to fall this morning meaning there will be significant to disruption to the flight schedule today.
“Passengers are advised to contact their airline to check the status of their flight and those travelling to the airport should allow extra time for the journey.”
The Times website will be updated with further details as they are known.
