A dog was found dead on Portishead beach, dumped in a rucksack weighed down with a brick.

The RSPCA has launched an investigation after the small brown crossbreed was found stashed in a bag on the sand.

The animal's microchip revealed she was just a year old and called Coco, but the contact details for the owner proved to be out of date.

RSPCA chief inspector Dan Hatfield said: “A member of the public found her body on April 10. She was placed in a rucksack, which had been weighed down by a distinct roofing brick.

“We have tried the contact details on the microchip but we have not had any luck, however we do believe she was from the area so it might be that local people will know who she belonged to.

“We're very keen to trace Coco's owner and also to find out how her body came to be dumped in this way. Anyone with information should contact us in complete confidence on 03001 238018.”
