Two mini roundabouts at Cabstand in Portishead are being made permanent.

North Somerset Council is making the roundabout at Cabstand and Station Road permanent by raising the middle of it and making it larger.

The zebra crossing will be moved five metres left to make it safer for pedestrians and a raised crossing point will be added to the High Street in between the roundabouts.

The mini roundabout which connects Wyndham Way, High Street and Station Road will be raised up and made permanent, a zebra crossing will be installed on the eastbound carriageway at Wyndham Way and a puffin crossing will be added on the westbound carriageway.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s executive member with responsibility for highways, said: “We trialled the mini roundabouts in response to feedback from local people and these are now being made permanent, providing a safe junction for road users and pedestrians.

“We’ll try to keep traffic flowing as much as possible while the works takes place but there is likely to be congestion in the area.

“We considered closing the junction for the duration of the works but doing that would have increased traffic on the alternative routes so we took the decision to use temporary lights instead.”

The £60,000 scheme starts on Tuesday and should take six weeks.

Changes are also being made to parking arrangements at Brunel Court. A walkway will be created between the road and the area in front of the library and the disabled bays are being re-marked.
