Crew members were paged at about 2.45pm on Tuesday with reports of a man who was struggling against an outgoing tide just past the lifeboat station.

The team launched at around 4.20pm and escorted the man back to the safety of shore.

A spokesman said: “Help was offered but was refused.

“The crew did not want to leave the man alone just in case they were needed, so stood off and made sure the casualty was safely back on shore before they returned to the station.”
