People and animals had to be rescued after a boat caught fire in water near Clevedon Pier.

RNLI Portishead was called at about 2.05pm yesterday (Sunday), shortly after the voluntary crew had finished a training exercise.

When they arrived on the scene, the boat’s owner had managed to extinguish the fire.

However, the RNLI was concerned over the people’s welfare and feared they may have inhaled a lot of smoke.

Therefore, the people and two dogs were taken to dry land, with assistance from Portishead coastguard.

The coastguard and RNLI teams from Portishead and Barry also then helped tow the boat back to the marina.

A Portishead RNLI spokesman said it had been a ‘busy day’ for its crew.
