Thousands of swimmers enjoyed a weekend of fun in the sun, as Portishead Open Air Pool welcomed a record-breaking number of visitors over the bank holiday weekend.
The lido, in Esplanade Road, has enjoyed a surge in popularity in the past few months – and its success continued over Easter as huge crowds of people enjoyed a dip beneath the baking-hot sun.
The volunteer-run pool's busiest day of the weekend came on Easter Monday, when it was at capacity for much of the day – forcing many people to queue up and wait for their turn to swim in the spring sunshine.
A hugely successful winter season, which saw thousands of people take to the water for heated swims over the Christmas period, prompted Portishead Pool Community Trust to extend the summer season by bringing its opening weekend forward by a fortnight.
And the trust has been duly rewarded, with more than 4,000 visitors to the pool since it opened on April 6 – 3,122 of which took to the water over the Easter weekend.
The volunteers believe the weekend signalled the perfect start to the lido's 10th summer since they were handed the keys by North Somerset Council.
The pool was revamped by American television star Ty Pennington for his Extreme Makeovers show in May 2009, and the trust hopes to celebrate the anniversary in style.
The pool trust's spokesman, Barbara Thatcher, is pleased with such a strong start to the season.
She said: “This is our 10th year of operation since the pool was taken on by the community and we brought forward our summer season by two weeks to coincide with the beginning of the school holidays.
“It has been very popular with young families and we have had 4,221 visitors since April 6.
“We are looking forward to the 10th anniversary of the televised makeover on May 25, which we plan to make an open day, and hope we will be just as lucky with the weather.”
