A RECENT visit to Germany has strengthened the twinning links between Portishead and Schweich.
Around 40 members of the twinning association recently returned from several days in the Moselle wine region.
In addition to sightseeing during their visit, the group enjoyed a big social event organised in their honour by the burgermeister of the community.
The roots of twinning in Portishead go back to 1944, when resident Dan Griffiths was sheltered from German troops near Den Dungen, in The Netherlands.
It took many years before Dan visited Holland again, and as a result the twinning agreement between the two towns was signed in 1989. The link was then made with Schweich in Germany, and formalised in 1992.
Association member Jean Lord said: “Twinning is a great way to make new friends, and get to know another country in a way not possible as a tourist. You can also practise your languages, although this is not essential, as the hosts all speak English, some very proficiently.”
