Hundreds of pounds have been handed to worthy causes by the organisers of a popular Portishead event.

Portishead Raft Race has awarded vital cash to three organisations after hundreds took part in the summer extravaganza.

The event raises money through sponsorship and stalls before sharing the proceeds between three good causes, and this year it launched a match-funding scheme with The Lakeside Café to boost the sums donated.

The lion’s share of the cash was awarded to Denny Troop 1st Portishead Scouts, who received £250 which will be spent on a trip to the international scout centre in Switzerland.

Portishead Pilot Gig Club received £150, which will be used to buy much needed safety equipment for sea rowing.

The Nursery Portishead was handed £100, which it has donated to charity Muscular Dystrophy UK – a cause it has been busy supporting throughout the year.
