A meeting to debate how to improve the fractious relationship between the people of Portishead and its town council will be held this week.

A parish meeting will take place at the Folk Hall, in High Street, tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7.30pm.

The meeting was called at the last full meeting of the town council on October 10 following public demand.

Tensions between Portishead Town Council and members of the public have been brewing for years, and the rift has worsened in recent months with some labelling the authority undemocratic.

The town council dismisses those claims, but members of the public are particularly concerned by the authority’s decision to change its standing orders at meetings.

Alterations to the rules have meant the public can only raise issues which are on the agenda of a given meeting, rather than being able to speak on any subject during the public participation forum.

The agenda for the meeting is available on the town council’s website.
