David Prout wants to put 100 poppies on the statue.

Poppies will start appearing on a Portishead sculpture this weekend in a bid to raise thousands for charity.

David Prout hopes to honour the heroes who gave their lives in World War One 100 years later by raising £10,000 for the Royal British Legion.

He has been calling on businesses and organisations to sponsor one of 100 poppies – which will be placed on Full Fathom Five sculpture at the marina – for £100 each.

The first poppies will be adorned on the sculpture on Sunday and will remain for a fortnight.

Mr Prout told the Times: “It really is humbling to receive so much support, particularly from local schools, four of whom have already signed up for a poppy

“St Peter’s Primary School was one of our first supporters, and it has enthusiastically helped to recruit the others.”
