Television presenter Jemma Cooper was joined by Father Christmas and the carnival royal family to turn on the bright lights before a fireworks display followed.

Children’s letters to Santa were also dropped off at Goodman & Lilley Estate Agents.

Portishead’s fantastic Christmas lights display is the result of year-round fundraising, successful grant applications, sponsorship and hundreds of hours of hard work by volunteers.

The lights run from one end of the High Street to the other and this year there are more lights than ever in the town as the Christmas lights committee has joined forces with the West Hill team.

The main sponsor of the lights this year is Future Bathrooms.

F H Halliday & Son, funeral directors and Portishead Motorcare in Portishead Precinct have also been major contributors.

A spokesman for the lights committee said: “It is thanks to donations like those made by these local businesses that allow the Portishead Christmas lights committee to continue to improve the display, year on year.

“We couldn’t do it without the support we get from the town.”

Tree of Light donation forms, which raise money for the Portishead lights, can still be submitted.
