The team behind Portishead Carnival hope tonight (Wednesday) will see the event handed a major financial boost.
Co-organisers Wendy Watkins and Jemma Cooper have asked Portishead Town Council for a grant to help secure the carnival’s future.
The event was dealt a blow this month when a sponsorship deal with the Old Mill pub turned sour.
Ms Cooper said: “We do have a reserve in the bank but we have done some costings and the margins are very tight. If we have bad weather and don’t raise much through our bucket collections it would put the whole event in jeopardy forever.”
If every visitor donated £1, she said it would fund the event for years.
An extraordinary meeting of the town council was arranged to see if the authority can help alleviate the financial pressure.
This year’s carnival is on June 16.
The council will meet tonight at the Folk Hall’s Eve Wiggan Room at 7.30pm.
